Wabi Sabi
I’ve been struggling with the direction that I want to take this site. I have a strong desire to add creativity to my life, and this is the best outlet for that. However, I’m often crippled by this need to be perfect. It can be so consuming that I often abandon my post midway through writing or completely scrap an entire month’s worth of ideas and images. I’ve fallen victim to the social media constructs of what it means to be a blogger; in order to be a successful blogger, one must showcase an enviable and unattainable curated life. It pains me to say that as my ultimate goal was to show a life lived…approximately.
During this most recent spell of “blog development,” I came across a Japanese concept called Wabi Sabi. Essentially, it is the idea of finding beauty in the imperfections. The quirks and eccentricities during construction of objects and processes are what makes it unique. Flaws are beautiful as that is what makes it special.
And I firmly believe that is what Style Approximately is all about. Adrienne and I have discussed several directions on where we feel this website will go. And you know what, we still don’t know! But that’s a beautiful thing. I think we’re okay with that: style and life (as a whole) is never a linear perfect path. We’re living approximately, and we hope you can feel just as okay and connected to your flaws as we are.
